Fame and fortune aside, why would anyone become an intellectual in our day and age? What experiences of the world foster this turn towards words, concepts, ideas?
This conversation will examine the life and work of George Scialabba, one of our most accomplished, respected public intellectuals, paying particular attention to his lifelong experience of depression as documented in his latest book, How to Be Depressed. In the process, we’ll examine some ways that suffering can influence our ways of thinking, reading and writing, and even make these activities seem like plausible ways to ameliorate some of the suffering in the world, and in our own lives.
