EASTER VIGIL
APRIL 3, 2021

After the day of great silence and reflection at the LORD’s tomb (Holy Saturday) so as to prepare ourselves for this night’s great Vigil, we have arrived at the culmination of our Lenten preparation and discipline. On this night, the Church assembles to spend much time listening to Scripture, singing psalms, acclaiming the Death and Resurrection of the LORD and welcoming into the Catholic community the catechumens. Beginning outside at the bonfire, we physically and symbolically carry the Light of Christ into the dark church, brightening it with Easter joy.

LUCERNARIUM:
THE PROCESSION

EXSULTET (THE EASTER PROCLAMATION)

Meaning “exult” in Latin, this ancient proclamation of the Church calls our attention to how this night is different from all others. The reader invites the entire Church to exult and rejoice at the fulfillment of the Paschal mystery.

Thy kingdom come,

and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

PRIEST: Deliver us, LORD, we pray, from every evil;
graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of Your mercy,

as we await the blessed hope

SIGN OF PEACE

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

If you are joining our parish family in worship through our livestream and cannot physically receive Holy Communion with us, you may join us by offering up this traditional prayer of spiritual Communion or one similar:

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You in my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.
